From the Principal

What do you want most for your child?
When many parents/carers are asked this question, they respond, ‘to be happy’. Deep down we do want our children to be happy, and of course, as an overarching concept it is fine. If we really think about this question, and the answer, expecting and wanting our children to be happy all the time is unrealistic, nor is it healthy.

From the Deputy Principal/APRIM

September is Catholic Charities month which involves the students preparing for this with special class fundraising projects. Catholic Charities month  is an important way for our students to learn about Jesus’ selfless love for others and how, in a small way, they can reach out and help others in our local and wider community.

From the Chairperson of School Board

Safety Concerns
The School Board has recently discussed concerns of safety and increased traffic around our school. Safety of our children travelling to and from school is of utmost importance.

Tarcoma Avenue and Marian Roads are busy with drop-offs and pick-ups. We encourage everyone to be respectful and courteous to each other and obey the traffic rules around these streets. Parking inspectors frequently patrolling these streets do issue fees to cars parked illegally.

The pedestrian crossing on Portrush Road is regularly used and is an ongoing concern for ensuring safety for our families.

The school has introduced new safety measures at this crossing. However, I would encourage families to report any traffic infringements directly to the school front office, who will in turn notify the police.

School Board Chairperson

Eastern Star Project

As part of the Eastern Star Project, we have been working towards improving Literacy outcomes for our students. To support professional development in this area, we have continued our work with Literacy consultant, Ms Carmel Small.

Recently, after a collection and analysis of data from all year levels on the reading and writing of Narrative genre texts, we formulated school wide goals to implement over a six-week period. Each year level spent half a day working with Carmel to plan targeted interventions and strategies to specifically improve the vocabulary, figurative language and inferential skill of our students in Narrative texts. At the end of the six-week period we will re-assess our students and re-analyse the data to compare and make further improvements required. We aim to recreate this model for other genres to remain responsive to the needs of our students.

In addition, the Eastern region is also looking into developing a wellbeing framework across the five schools. One of the main objectives, is to continue to develop resilience, a growth mindset and wellbeing of our students and teachers. I will keep you posted as this continues to progress.
