From the Principal

When children's friendships work out differently
Throughout the school years, we’ll find we won’t always agree with whom our children choose to spend their time – be it at school, or out of school. We want our children to ‘hang out’ with peers who will be a good influence. However, here’s some perspective. Certain children, like adults, make better choices than others; and some have better developed social skills than their friends. Think of them as ‘humans in training’.

From the Deputy Principal

At St Joseph’s School, we take cyber issues very seriously. The app Tik.Tok is one that we find quite concerning with our young students. As with most of the social media apps, they are aimed for people 13 years and older. This is because the content of the apps is better suited to people who have more maturity and an ability to use the social media sites safely. It is our desire and the desire of all parents to see their children fully develop into a healthy, successful, contributing member of society.

The Federation of Catholic Schools

St Joseph’s Primary School Payneham
SA Federation of Catholic Schools Report September 2020
John Flynn

The Federation of Catholic School Parent Communities SA

They promote, support and advocate for the interests of parents and families who have chosen, or would like to choose, a Catholic education for their children.

For over 50 years, they have been a strong advocate for:

  • the right of all children to receive an excellent education
  • the right of parents/carers to choose schools that suit their children’s and family needs
  • fair funding from governments to support students in Catholic and other non-government schools
  • the right of parents/carers to have a voice in education and other matters that affect their children
  • the need to better support parents and families to engage in their children’s learning and build the capacity of teachers and parents to work as partners.

News
The Federation has received a new funding agreement from Minister for Education John Gardner to support our work with parents, families, children and Catholic school communities.

When they met with the Minister last year, he was extremely enthusiastic about their commitment to re-connect with regional and rural communities, and their engagement forums for parents and school staff.

The Federation has been lucky to receive operational grants from both Liberal and Labor state governments for many years. They have always understood these can't be taken for granted or considered 'their right', and especially now that grant funding is hotly contested.

The Minister's decision to provide a three-year funding agreement, and increase the annual amount from $22,000 to $30,000, is testimony to his appreciation and respect of the work the federation does and the way they go about it.

AGM 2020
Highlights from the 2019 Federation Council & Office Report:

  • They introduced a new affiliation fee structure which means all school communities who choose to affiliate with them pay less than they used to, some pay a lot less, and some now have free membership.
  • Twenty-seven schools joined after Catholic Education SA lifted its ban on schools affiliating with them. Others said they had not thought about this when setting their 2019 budget but would do in 2020.
  • They appointed two very part-time Parent Engagement Officers who have been wonderful. With some extra help from Council members, the Federation visited 16 schools in Terms 3 - 4.
  • They presented on their role and work to the South Australian Catholic Primary Principals Association and met with the Australian Catholic Primary Principals Association.
  • They distributed $29,500 on behalf of Minister for Education John Gardner to support PIE grant projects in 16 school communities.

25th Anniversary
Reading Writing Hotline - 1300 655 5506
A free national referral service for adults

Lots of parents struggle with their own reading and writing, but don't know where to go for support. The Reading Writing Hotline is a free national phone service that puts adults in touch with the help they need.

  • Their phones are answered by specialist teachers who can help find the most appropriate classes, tutors, or learning materials; and
  • They have a national database of classes, tutors and online help.

Many parents make sacrifices for their children's education but are embarrassed about their own learning needs. Sometimes people just need to chat and get advice about literacy issues. The Hotline is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year and in that time has helped over 160,000 adults to find literacy and numeracy classes.

As an organisation that works with parents, we want to let you know about the Reading Writing Hotline's information and workbooks for parents, such as

  • spelling
  • writing for the workplace
  • filling in forms and writing school notes
  • reading to your child

You can partner with the Hotline by;

  • Emailing or Calling for more information about how they can work with you
    enquiries@readingwritinghotline.edu.au    1300 6555 06
  • Check out their website for details, case studies and videos

Eastern Star.jpg

Eastern Star Project

As part of the Eastern Star Project one of our main objectives has been to identify and further support the wellbeing of our staff, students and parents. Currently, we have a wellbeing team who are investigating possible programs that can be implemented across the Eastern region to enhance resilience, enforce positive education, strengthen relationships and provide coping mechanisms for students in difficult situations. Alongside this, we will be offering parent workshops beginning this year and continuing in to 2021 to allow for education of parents as well as staff and students.  Our first workshop, is ‘Developing Resilience in Children’ which will be held on Friday 16 October at 9:15am in our school gymnasium. The focus will be ‘developing resilience in children’, to be facilitated by Positive Minds Australia.

As well as this, we are further strengthening relationships between our Catholic Primary and Secondary Schools in the Eastern region. This will include a range of objectives and will involve teachers and leaders from each of the schools working together to achieve smoother transitions and sharing of pedagogies.  We are very excited about the opportunity to be working alongside our Colleges to enable more collaboration and connections. I will keep you updated as these initiatives continue to unfold.

Book Week.jpg

Book Week & The Book Fair

Will be celebrated in Term Four, Week 2 (Week beginning 19th October)

The Book Week for 2020 is ‘Curious Creatures Wild Minds’.

The theme embraces the excited curiosity every reader has when opening a book. Where will Book Week take your family? Will you find your ‘Curious Creature’ from the past, like dinosaurs, or will it be a fantasy, or a mythical creature? Perhaps your ‘Wild Creature’ will come from the jungle, or under the sea, or another universe? Maybe you will have the ‘Wild Mind’ of an explorer, adventurer, or the great mind of a scientist?

Book Week is a fantastic opportunity for children to celebrate their favourite characters from their most loved book by ‘’dressing up. With the magic of books the possibilities are endless.

Some ‘Curious Creatures Wild Minds’ costume ideas could include characters such as, The Gruffalo, creatures from Where the Wild Things Are, the BFG, Mr Men, or the old favourite, characters from Harry Potter. Perhaps a mythical creature like a dragon, unicorn, or fairy.

Take a look at some of the wonderful ideas from the websites below, where costumes can be made easily and cheaply at home.

https://theorganisedhousewife.com.au/back-to-school/book-week-2020-costume-ideas-curious-creatures-wild-minds/

There are many, many choices of costume ideas that you can explore for Book Week.

Book Week Parade
The Book Week parade will be held on Thursday 22nd October on the asphalt. Due to current restrictions and regulations, this year there will be two sessions:

  • The Preschool to Year 2 parade will be held at 9.00am; and
  • Years 3 – 6 parade will be held at 10.00am.

Also, due to current parameters, one family member per student can be present for the parade.

Book Fair
During Book Week we will also be holding the Book Fair in the Library from Tuesday 20th October to Friday 23rd October.

Children will be able to purchase books during the week, before school at 8:30am to 9:00am; during Year 3-6 lunchtime, from 1:30 to 2:10pm; or after school from 3:00pm to 3:40pm. The last day to purchase books will be Friday morning, the 23rd October. Due to restrictions there will be a maximum amount of people allowed in the library at the one time.

This year your child may bring home a Book Fair Wish List.  You then have the option to pay for these items by credit in advance. Your child then takes the Wish List with a receipt number as record of payment back to the Fair to collect the books.
