Eastern Star Project

Welcome back to all parents and families. What an exciting year we have ahead. As you know we are in our second year of the Star Program which involves the collaboration of the schools in the eastern region. The continued aim is to further improve our teaching practice, students’ outcomes and wellbeing for all. We have a range of ongoing professional development occurring this year. This includes continued work with Lisa-Jane O’Connor, president of the Primary Maths Association on a fortnightly basis with our champion teachers for 2021, Amanda Karam and Margaret McConnell. There will also be opportunity for all staff to engage with Lisa-Jane and continue upskilling our knowledge and expertise as teachers of Mathematics.

We also have some parent workshops which we strongly encourage you to attend, to assist your child to become powerful choosers and users of Mathematics. Our first workshop was on Monday 15th February where Lisa-Jane provided fun ways to assist your child to become fluent with their Math facts. The parents enjoyed interacting with one another and practising some new and exciting games to play with their child. Details of our next workshop are below:

WORKSHOP TWO: Tuesday 2nd March at 7pm in the Gymnasium: Helping your child become a powerful mathematician (for all R-6 parents/carers)

As well as this, we are working with Literacy Consultant Linda Clune throughout the year as we revolutionise our reading program using current research and evidence-based practices. The Reception, Year One and Year Two teachers will be working with Linda on a fortnightly basis for the first semester of this year. Recently, Linda presented to our junior primary parents informing them of some of the changes that will occur and how our brains learn to read! Thank you to all who attended; it was a wonderful turn out and well received by parents. We look forward to keeping you all updated as our learning journey in this project continues.

Until next time…

Children's University

Our students have the opportunity to be involved in an exciting program: ‘Children’s University Australasia and Africa’. Children’s University (CU) aims to encourage high quality out of school activities for children in Years 3 to 6, engaging the wider community as learning partners in this process. The most important principles of CU are that participation is voluntary and activities must take place outside the normal school day during lunch, after school, weekends and holidays.

Led by the University of Adelaide, CU aims to nurture aspirations and develop a love of learning. Children and young people enrolled in CU are issued with a ‘Passport to Learning’ which records their individual learning journey. After the first 30 hours of learning, children are rewarded for their participation at a graduation ceremony held at the University of Adelaide.

Participating students have access to activities at school, online and also in the wider community (Learning Destinations).

As CU is not compulsory, children are encouraged to take responsibility for their learning, choosing what to do from a variety of offerings. All CU learning is designed to inspire children to think about their futures with a greater knowledge of the careers and professions that they could aspire to.

Dr Luca Prisciandaro will be attending our school on Thursday 4th March to deliver an information session to the students regarding Children’s University membership – registration forms will be sent home in the days following.

Peta Yates is our school’s CU coordinator. Please contact her via email pyates@stjopayn.catholic.edu.au or speak with her in the front office on a Friday.
