St Joseph's Payneham eNewsletter #7

From the Principal

Dear Families,

Trusting everyone had a restful and rewarding two-week holiday and now ready to embrace the learning and challenges that the new term will hold.

School-Home Communication
Quality relationships are core for a happy and connected life. Positive, understanding, honest and clear communication is essential to any fruitful relationship.

In a school environment, good communication amongst the staff, parents/carers and students is critical to provide the best possible education (for our students). This dialogue is not just about the school communicating, but requires parents/carers, students and staff to feel able to communicate their aspirations, concerns and ideas.

One of the best ways that parents/carers can help their children succeed in school, is to be involved with their education. This starts with sound communication between the parent/carer and the respective class teacher.

Remember, you do not need to wait for a ‘parent/teacher interview’ if you want to know how your child is travelling. Rather, make an appointment to see your child’s teacher. This can occur at any stage of the school year.

More formal Parent/Teacher Interviews, will occur at the start of Term Three, after the Semester One Reports have been issued (in the final week of this term). Details will be provided in due course.

In conclusion, using the communication channels and processes available, that respect all members of the community, will support us all, in what we endeavour to achieve.

Welcome back Verity Rye
Whilst I welcome everyone to the new school term, I especially wish to welcome back Verity Rye, our OSHC Director, who returns to St Joseph’s Payneham, after spending the last nine months on maternity leave.

Condolences
Marta Mallamo, mother of Samara in 3S, passed away at the start of the school holidays. Marta had been ill for a period of time. Unfortunately, another young and beautiful parent has departed from our life. Our sympathies are with Claudio (husband) and Samara during this very difficult period.

Also, our condolences to Julia Johnson (the school’s singing tutor). Julia’s father, Peter Maloney, passed away over the weekend. Peter was 93 years of age.

Commencement of Term Two – Uniform requirements
Term Two is when the school Winter Uniform is worn. We always have a two-week transition period. However, by the start of Week 3 all students need to be wearing the Winter Uniform. If you are unsure of any school uniform requirements, please speak with your child’s class teacher, or the Front Office.

Parent/Carer Workshop
You may be interested in attending a free workshop being facilitated by ‘Positive Minds Australia’, which will be held in our Gymnasium on Friday 14 May, commencing at 9:15am. Further details will be provided soon.

Wishing you well,
Simon Mechis

Project Compassion
Last term the children raised $701.00 during Lent.
These donations are used to help the world’s poor in order to help end poverty, promote justice and uphold dignity. Well done to everyone who support the children and the school during Project Compassion.

Growth Mindset
SJP is passionate about developing students who are resilient, have a love of learning and are unafraid to act in order to accomplish goals.

We continue our journey at St Joseph's in learning about growth mindset and applying its principles to the daily lives of our students. Moreover, we look forward each year to achieving great things in partnership with our parents as we work together, speaking the same language, to promote a growth mindset in all our students.

Modelling a growth mindset means being willing to try hard even when failure is likely because that’s how growth happens. Parents should try to get excited when their children make mistakes because these mistakes can reveal important gaps that should be filled. When adults get excited about the learning that mistakes can facilitate, children start to think of mistakes as a natural part of the learning process. This leads to a few important changes in children’s learning behaviour:

  1. Children stop avoiding challenging work just because it could mean making more mistakes.
  2. Children become less likely to try to “sweep mistakes under the rug” because they stop thinking of them as something to be ashamed of.

Some ideas parents can do at home:
  • Make mistakes in front of your children, have a positive reaction to those mistakes, and openly reflect on what could be learned from the mistake. Try to show that it’s all about learning, not about being right.
  • At the dinner table, talk about a time that you struggled with something and how hard it is and how you overcame it. Then ask your children if there’s anything they struggled with, how they overcome it, and what they learned from the experience.
  • Get excited when your child makes a mistake and help them think through what could be learned from it. Even mistakes that seem careless can be good learning opportunities. For example, if your child forgot to study enough for an important test, it might be an opportunity to learn about prioritization and to-do-lists.

STEM- Coding and Robotics
STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. In the school setting, STEM is an interdisciplinary approach to learning. When these areas are taught in an integrated way, students are better able to appreciate how each part is necessary for the success of any complex, real world project.

The idea behind STEM is to prepare students for successful careers in the 21st century workforce. We live in a time of knowledge and information explosion. Our children will be working in jobs that don’t even exist today. One thing which is certain about careers of the future is that they will involve constant change. STEAM education seeks to teach students to be creative, innovative, critical thinkers; all skills needed for adapting to change. If students develop skills needed to think deeply and critically, they will be prepared to become the innovators and leaders of our future.

We are very proud of our coding and robotics programs at SJP.  We are able provide students and teachers with access to a range of coding and robotics resources that engage students in future-focused learning.

Our Robotics Program also allows students to work cooperatively with their peers, problem-solve, innovate, create and investigate with technologies.

Some of Our Robots
Bee-bot

Bee-bot robots are great for students starting their journey into the world of coding and robotics.

Pro-bots
The Probot is a robot with a wider range of coding for students P - 2.

Sphero
Our first Sphero was purchased in 2015. We were so impressed at the versatility and range of applications in an education setting that we expanded our collection. The students look forward to using our new set of Sphero and applying their coding skills.

Mindstorms EV3
Students learn to construct, test and explore the EV3 robot in depth.

This term all students R-6 will be taking part in a Robotics program.
Reception - Bee bots / Pro-bots
Year 1 and 2 - Sphero SPRK
Year 3 and 4 - Sphero SPRK
Year 5 and 6 - Lego Mindstorms EV3

Student Wellbeing at St Joseph's Payneham

As part of the Star Program we have been fortunate to have Madhavi from Positive Minds Australia work with our cluster of schools, St Joseph’s Payneham, St Joseph’s Hectorville, St Joseph’s Tranmere, St Joseph’s Memorial and St Francis Newton.

Last year, Madhavi spoke to our communities about building resilience in our children.
In March of this year, Madhavi’s session focused on teaching children the tools for healthy friendships. She spoke about how developing friendships involves building resilience and developing emotional and social intelligence in our children. We need to remember that this is a lifelong process and our children are learning how to do this. All children will make mistakes; they will be faced with friendship issues and they will look to us for support and guidance. It is what we model and teach them in these moments that will help to shape them.

I have included a brief summary of some ideas Madhavi suggested you can do for your child that will support the development of healthy friendships:

  • Teach them empathy and compassion.
  • Teach them unconditional acceptance of others.
  • Teach them social skills.
  • Teach them to be good observers of others and their feelings.
  • Teach them to read emotional tones.
  • Model and role play scenarios pointing out feelings from all perspectives and viewpoints.
  • Support their development of coping skills – self and emotional regulation.
  • Be a good listener.
  • Encourage and support them.
  • If they come to you with a problem or friendship issue, acknowledge their hurt or pain so they know they’ve been heard; but try not to pass judgement because sometimes children can work it out themselves. Sometimes children can resolve issues through space and time and often natural forgiveness occurs without our intervention.
  • Have optimism, try not to catastrophise a situation and above all else.
  • Use kindness to resolve problems. Even if a problem can’t be solved there is always a kind solution.

As a cluster group we are working with Madhavi to plan another session, she would like your input too, as parents/carers, in planning a focus for this session. If you have any suggestions, please email me your ideas at: ascarpantoni@stjopayn.catholic.edu.au

Looking forward to continuing our work with Madhavi and Positive Minds Australia.
