Why purposeful living is important
Purpose gives direction to our lives and helps us set meaningful goals. Psychologist Viktor Frankl, who spent three years imprisoned in various concentration camps, and author of Man’s Search for Meaning, wrote, “Purpose is the glue that holds us together”.
Former Roman emperor and Stoic philosopher, Marcus Aurelius stated, “Whenever you have trouble getting up in the morning, remind yourself that you’ve been made by nature for the purpose of working with others. It’s our natural purpose that is more fitting and more satisfying.”
Modern-day writer Ryan Holiday, who has transcribed the Stoic texts, explains that Marcus Aurelius’ message is about the obligation we have to one another. We are made for cooperation with each other. In other words, a core purpose for humankind is to help render great work together and showing up is key.
Understanding and embracing our purpose can significantly impact our children's development and well-being.
For children, having a sense of purpose can enhance their motivation, self-esteem, and resilience. It encourages them to explore their interests, develop their passions, and contribute positively to their communities.
A few ways we can help nurture a sense of purpose in our children:
- Encourage exploration: Allow children to try different activities, hobbies, and interests. This exploration can help them discover what they are passionate about.
- Discuss values: Discuss what matters most to your family and community. Help your child understand the importance of values like kindness, honesty, and responsibility.
- Set goals together: Work with your child to set achievable goals. Celebrate their progress, no matter how small, to help them see the impact of their efforts.
- Model purposeful living: Share your own experiences of finding purpose and how it shapes your decisions. Your example can inspire them to seek their own path.
- Have stronger connections: Purposeful living encourages empathy and connection with others. When children understand their role in the community and the importance of contributing, they build meaningful relationships and a sense of belonging.
- Resilience in challenges: Life is filled with ups and downs. Having a strong sense of purpose helps children navigate challenges with resilience. It fosters a mindset that views obstacles as opportunities for growth rather than setbacks.
As we guide our children in discovering their purpose, we also create a supportive environment that fosters growth and fulfillment.

Sports Day thanks
Thank you for your attendance at Sports Day on Friday 8 November. It was a splendid and successful day.
I acknowledge the children’s effort and enthusiasm; our parent volunteers who assisted in walking the children to and from Payneham Oval; staff who ensured the events ran effectively and those who assisted in the setting and packing up of equipment including the scorers, First Aid officers and fruit distributors; the P&F and Board members who organised the coffee van, drinks and lunches for the day; and the generosity of Tony and Mark’s for supplying the fruit.
Lastly, I extend my gratitude and thanks to Physical Education Teacher and Coordinator, Adrian Mastrangelo, for the planning, organisation and work in the lead up to Sports Day – it’s a big task and I congratulate Adrian, as well as the Sports Day Committee, on a very successful school-wide event.

School Fees
As per my circular last week, at the recent School Board Meeting, it was endorsed that a small increase of 3% to school and preschool fees be applied for the 2025 school year. In monetary terms, for full fee-paying families (based on one child), this is a total increase of $92 per year. For families who pay the low discount fees, this is an increase of $55 per year (again based on one child). For families who have a child in the preschool this equates to a total increase of $43 per year.
There will be a $1 increase (per session) for OSHC and a $2 increase (per session) for Vacation Care. Occasional Care (Piccolini) and Playgroup session fees will remain the same.
The last fee increase was for the 2020 school year. In 2021, school fees were reduced, and the fees have remained the same since.
If any family has financial concerns, in the first instance please contact our Finance Officer, Helen Crosato (hcrosato@stjopayn.catholic.edu.au) to confidentially discuss additional support through fee remissions.
